Guardamar del Segura - the best in Costa Blanca
Guardamar town in Spain - Guide to Spain
Guardamar del Segura is a cosy resort town with an area of 36 square kilometres, located on the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante, Valencian Autonomous Community. The main attraction of Guardamar is, of course, its beaches with their soft golden sand and clear water. So, let’s start our journey to this town from its fantastic beaches.
Location
The total length of the Guardamar sandy coast is about 11 kilometres. Moreover, 4 out of 8 beaches have the Blue Flag for their impeccable cleanliness and well-developed infrastructure, which are considered the best in Spain. They are cleaned daily with the use of special equipment.
Guardamar is extraordinary due to its variety of natural landscapes. On one side, there are sand dunes and rich coastal forests. On the other — the Segura River, which flows into the Mediterranean Sea. And on the third side, there are small mountains offering stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea, Santa Pola Bay, and Tabarca Island.
Particular attention should be paid to the natural park of La Mata and, of course, pink salty lagoons, amazing in their beauty and healing properties. These lakes maintain their own microclimate, which is especially recommended for people suffering from respiratory diseases and allergies. And beside that, the climate is congenial for pregnant women and children.
Climate
One of the main reasons why Guardamar attracts so many people is its climate — 320 sunny days a year. In addition, it is not hot in summer and not cold in winter here. The average August air temperature here is +27 degrees, and in cold months it’s about 17-20 degrees, so even in winter you can meet leisure travellers on the beach. It is almost never cloudy here, and rains are very rare.
Infrastructure:
Guardamar has everything for a comfortable life: lots of supermarkets (Lidl, Mercadona, MasyMas), large shopping and entertainment centres, bars and restaurants with delicious local cuisine, beauty salons, SPAs, sports grounds and fitness centres, kindergartens, schools, and much more.
For example, in a 15 minutes’ drive towards the nearest town of Torrievieja, you will find one of the largest shopping and entertainment centres of the Costa Blanca — the famous Habaneras with its numerous shops of famous world brands, cafes, restaurants, and many other entertainments.
Sports
Guardamar is ideal for active lifestyle lovers, because here they can enjoy outdoor sports all year round: running, cycling, lawn tennis, football, and so on. The modern yacht club Marina de las Dunas will also delight true admirers of water sports: windsurfing, kiting, sailing, and much more. And, of course, a vibrant underwater world with unforgettable diving experiences.
Just a 10 minutes’ drive away from Guardamar (in Rojales), and you will find the famous golf courses. The Costa Blanca is a true paradise for this sport. No wonder that the town attracts golfers from all over the world.
The CIUDAD QUESADA water park is also situated in Rojales, occupying an area of 21 hectares and offering an excellent selection of water slides and attractions for the whole family.
And a 15 minutes’ drive towards the city of Torrievieja will take you to a large number of fitness clubs, yoga centres, tennis courts, and football grounds.
Food
The town of Guardamar is surrounded on almost all sides by citrus orchards, as well as vegetable gardens where local farmers grow organic vegetables: tomatoes, cucumbers, broccoli, artichokes, eggplants, and much more.
In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, the local street markets offer a big variety of seafood, as Guardamar is famous for freshly-caught shrimps and conger eels that arrive daily at its fishing port. So, if healthy food is your thing, this city will surely delight you.
Population
According to official data for 2019, about 16 thousand people live in Guardamar. The population of this town has been largely replenished by foreigners who have settled here in the last 10 years, as it is a favourite vacation spot for residents of Great Britain and Northern Europe. They account for more than 40% of the total number of permanent dwellers.
Airport
The region is close to N332 motorway, making it convenient to travel around Spain and Europe by car. Alicante Airport is 40 minutes away and Murcia Airport is just 20 minutes away.
